Can I use third-party filament?

Yes. Any 1.75mm filament works. The RFID is a convenience feature, not a lock-in. Set the filament type manually in Bambu Studio and you'll get identical results, often at lower cost.

Quick setup (5 steps)
  1. In Bambu Studio, select the generic profile (Generic PLA, Generic PETG, etc.)
  2. Set nozzle temperature to the manufacturer's recommendation
  3. Set bed temperature for your plate type
  4. Save as a custom filament profile
  5. On AMS: manually assign the filament type when loading
  • Diameter consistency: 1.75mm ± 0.02mm throughout the spool
  • Roundness: Oval filament doesn't feed properly
  • Moisture content: Dry filament prints better. Look for vacuum-sealed packaging with desiccant
  • Winding quality: Tangled spools cause mid-print failures

The most forgiving material for third-party filament. Quality is consistent across brands.

eSUN PLA+ is the community go-to. Polymaker PolyTerra for eco-friendly matte finish. Hatchbox is reliable and widely available. Temperature: 190-240°C nozzle, 35-65°C bed.

More variation between brands than PLA. Sunlu PETG is cheap and reliable. Polymaker and eSun also have good options. Temperature: 240-270°C nozzle, 60-80°C bed. Use glue stick on smooth PEI.

Requires enclosed printer (P1S, P2S, X1C, H2S). eSUN ABS+ and Polymaker PolyLite ASA have good community track records. ASA is UV-resistant for outdoor parts. Temperature: 240-280°C nozzle for both ABS and ASA, bed 90-100°C.

Quality varies significantly. Overture TPU 95A works well. Print slowly, about 35–40 mm/s (Bambu Studio's Generic TPU profile caps flow at 3.2 mm³/s). Minimal or no retraction. Feed it from the external spool holder, not through the AMS or AMS lite: Bambu lists TPU 95A as too soft for the AMS path. For TPU in the AMS, Bambu sells a dedicated TPU for AMS.

Bambu filament is genuinely good. The RFID auto-configuration is convenient when you're learning. Once you're comfortable manually setting profiles, third-party filament can save money without sacrificing results. Compare per roll, though: since Bambu's September 16, 2026 price cut, its mix-and-match bulk pricing (PLA Basic refill from $11.19, PETG Basic refill from $9.79 at 10 rolls, Bambu US store, checked October 7, 2026) puts Bambu filament close to budget third-party spools such as Sunlu PETG or Overture PLA once you buy several rolls; check the current Amazon price before you decide.

Sources: nozzle and bed ranges from Bambu Lab filament material table (nozzle ranges listed with a ±10°C tolerance); TPU speed from Bambu Studio's Generic TPU profile (3.2 mm³/s maximum volumetric speed, checked October 4, 2026). Within that range, start from the temperature printed on your spool.
