Bambu Lab A1 mini

The easiest Bambu printer. Sets up in 20 minutes, calibrates itself, prints reliably from day one.

Should I buy the A1 mini?

Yes, if you're new to 3D printing and mostly print PLA. It's the easiest, cheapest way into the Bambu ecosystem. If you'll want to print objects larger than 180mm, get the A1 ($299) instead.

Who should buy the A1 mini?

  • PLA and PETG beginnerGood fit

Bambu rates PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA as ideal on the A1 mini, and the 180 × 180 × 180 mm build volume covers small parts, toys and test prints. A1 vs A1 mini (Bambu A1 mini specs)

  • Bigger printsLook elsewhere

The bed is the main limit; the A1 keeps the same open design and materials with a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume. A1 vs A1 mini

  • MulticolorGood fit

One AMS lite adds four colors, or the A Series AMS Hub (sold separately) connects up to four AMS, AMS 2 Pro or AMS HT units instead. A1 mini vs P1S (Bambu wiki)

  • ABS, ASA and engineeringLook elsewhere

Bambu rates ABS, ASA, PC, PA and fiber-filled filament as not recommended on the open A1 mini; we would start with the enclosed P2S. A1 mini vs P2S (Bambu A1 mini specs)

Known issues

  • Updating offline from 01.04.00.00 or older to 01.08.01.00 can show garbled text; Bambu's fix is to run the offline update again or connect the printer to the network. (Bambu release notes)
  • Only one AMS lite per printer, and it cannot be combined with the AMS, AMS 2 Pro or AMS HT. (Bambu wiki)

Known issues only from Bambu's own wiki, firmware release notes, FAQ, blog and recall pages, checked October 2, 2026. Specs: our table above and Bambu's spec pages.

Verdict

The A1 mini is the best "I've never printed before" answer. Setup takes 20 minutes, first print usually works, automatic calibration handles the rest. The 180mm volume is the main constraint, fine for most hobby prints, limiting for larger projects. If you need more room, the A1 ($299) has 256mm. The A1 mini Combo with AMS Lite ($329) adds 4-color printing and is worth it if multi-color interests you.

No enclosure means no ABS/ASA. PLA, PETG, and TPU all work well. For engineering materials, look at the P2S or higher.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Best out-of-box experience under $300
  • Fully automatic calibration
  • Compact, fits on any desk
  • AMS Lite for multi-color
  • Fast for the price
  • Good ecosystem (app, cloud, Orca)

Cons

  • 180mm volume is small
  • No enclosure, no ABS/ASA
  • Bed maxes at 80°C
  • Camera is low frame rate, not a live video feed
  • No HEPA/carbon filter
  • Cloud required by default (LAN workaround exists)

Material compatibility

Filled circle: works well. Half: capable, or only with upgrades. Empty: not recommended.

MaterialSupportNotes
PLA / PLA+NativeIdeal material
PETGNativeGood for functional parts
TPU (95A)SupportedPrint at about 35–40 mm/s (Bambu Studio's Generic TPU profile caps flow at 3.2 mm³/s).
PLA-CFNot recommendedBambu's rating for fiber-filled filament on the A1 mini. Abrasive: if you try it, swap to a hardened nozzle first.
ABS / ASANot recommendedNo enclosure = warping
PA / PCNot recommendedBambu's rating for the A1 mini.

Setup tips

First boot
Run auto-calibration before your first print (~10 minutes). Sets vibration compensation and flow correctly.
LAN mode
Enable LAN Only + Developer Mode in Settings for Orca Slicer. Use the access code and local IP.
Bed adhesion
Textured PEI grips PLA without glue. Wash it with warm water and dish soap when adhesion drops (Bambu); a 90%+ IPA wipe between washes is fine. For PETG, use glue stick as release agent.

Common questions

A1 mini or A1?

Mini for small prints under 180mm. A1 for anything bigger. The $80 difference ($219 vs $299) is worth it if you're unsure.

Do I need the AMS Lite?

Not immediately. Start with one spool, add AMS Lite later when you want multi-color. Since firmware 01.07.00.00 (October 2025) the A1 mini also works with up to four AMS, AMS 2 Pro or AMS HT units through the A Series AMS Hub (sold separately), though not mixed with an AMS Lite.

Can I use Orca Slicer?

Yes. Enable LAN + Developer Mode, connect via IP. Works fully.

Is it loud?

Bambu says Silent Mode and Active Motor Noise Canceling bring it down to under 48 dB, so standard printing is louder than that.

Starter accessories for the A1 mini

What we would add to a new A1 mini in the first month.

  • SUNLU FilaDryer S2

    SUNLU FilaDryer S2

The A1 mini is open frame, so spools sit in room air. Drying PETG and older PLA stops stringing before it starts.

    Amazon

  • TEQStone Bed Adhesive

    TEQStone Bed Adhesive

Works as a release agent for PETG on the A1 mini's textured plate, so prints pop off instead of bonding to it.

    Amazon

  • Bambu Hotend A1/A2, hardened steel

    Bambu Hotend A1/A2, hardened steel

Bambu's own hotend in hardened steel for the A1 mini (also fits the A1 and A2L). It replaces the whole stock hotend, since nozzle and heatsink are one part, and is what abrasive CF and GF filaments need.

    Bambu Lab

  • eSUN PLA+

    eSUN PLA+

Consistent budget PLA+ that runs well on the A1 mini's stock profiles. A good first spool once the sample runs out.
